Tim Dallaway seems to have been around the classic scene for years.

His father, John (number 64), usually aboard a 350 BSA, was a regular competitor when Tim was just a lad and his mother, Val, did her stint as secretary of Devon Classic, so it was inevitable that Tim would make an early start under his father’s watchful eye alongside his grandparents, who were important influences in the early days.

Tim’s championship debut came 12 years ago at Hawkstone Park.

At that stage I had not seen him ride and his experience was limited to a few classic meetings in the West Country.

I watched Tim in practice and needed little persuasion from John to include him in the championship line-up.

I remember he rode very confidently on one of his father’s 350s.

The sandy terrain and the demands of a Grand Prix circuit didn’t seem to daunt him at all.

However, his debut didn’t end in glory.

In the first race, while running in 12th position, he ran out of fuel!

In the second he retired with a faulty kill switch.

Nevertheless, I saw enough potential to have no doubts about including him in future championship events.

Since then this likeable young man from near Honiton in Devon has been a championship regular, switching from a BSA Victor in the Pre-74 category to the ex-Roger Neale 650cc Triumph Metisse in the Pre-65 class with equal success.
