Silver lining

Before the rains came, the Yeovil club combined business with pleasure, hosting their second big charity meeting for cancer research at Little Silver. Here’s what happened…

Now in its second year, the already prestigious Cancer Research Twinshock meeting, hosted by the Yeovil Twinshock Club at the Little Silver Moto Park near Exeter earlier in the season, once again provided fast racing and total ‘rock and roll’ entertainment.

silverFirst on the line were the classics and the racing from these older machines was fast and furious. In all five races Welsh Man Andy Roberton aboard his BSA showed his smoothness and took five excellent wins. But he was pushed hard by Phil Roberts aboard his CZ on both days – though chain failure in two out of five races lost Phil the overall runner-up spot to the consistent Rupert Copping, who notched five consistent rides.

Next up were the 250cc twinshocks. In all five races of the weekend the top spots were fought out between Lee Harthill and Rob Mosley. After three consistent rides on Saturday, Mosely had a slim lead over Hartill and after a race four victory it looked like the overall was there for the taking for Mosley. However, as the field crossed the line for the first time in the final race of the weekend, Mosley was back in 11th after a poor start. By lap four though, he had fought his way back to fourth – enough to give him the overall. But there was more drama to come and, half way round the final lap the engine of his 250cc Honda gave way handing the overall to Harthill.

silverAs in the previous years event the four-stroke class was well contested and the racing produced by the top runners was of the highest order. In race one of the weekend it was wild Ken Hanson who took an early advantage with a slim victory over Husqvarna man Wayne Partington. Partington was determined to show Hanson his real form in the next race and he demonstrated it by taking a start to finish victory. And he duplicated this in the final race of the Saturday’s events. As the dawn broke on Sunday’s racing Partington seemed determined to continue his winning ways and two further fine rides earned him a total of four victories for the weekend and the overall.

Mark Silvester the current National Twinshock Champion had mixed fortunes in 2006 and he was determined to change this is 2007. Although pushed by Maico man Tom Lowe, especially in race one of Sunday when Lowe held the lead for half of the race, it was Silvester who took five wins and the overall for the day.
