If you've sold online before you may have received a scam email, but if you haven't - or are new to selling via the internet, here are a few vital points to watch out for when you receive emails from potential buyers (Or people emailing you out of the blue and trying to scam you..):

Scammers arn't interest in your bike. They'll not haggle or ask technical questions - other then want to see pictures - all they are interested in - is conning you into sending them money.

How a basic scam works:
Someone will email you expressing interest. Generally the email is in poor English, or fails to give any specific details about the item they are supposed to be buying. (Sometimes they will 'cut & paste' the first line of your advert into the scam)
The scam is to send YOU a fake cheque for thousands of pounds MORE then the asking price - with the request that you post on the difference to their 'shipping agent'.
The cheque/draft they send you is fake, takes weeks to clear and in this time they will pressure you heavily to send on the difference. When the fake cheque bounces, you are suddenly several thousand out of pocket.

ULTIMATE TIP #1 - Unsure about a buyer?
To put off any scammer, insist on payment by cash in person only.
ULTIMATE TIP #2 - Scammers ALWAYS ALWAYS want to send you way more then the item is worth and get you to send on the difference to a shipping agent/friend.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON ANY CHEQUE-BASED SCAMS

Where scammers get you is that bankers drafts or Western Union Cheques can take up to 2 weeks to be of any value, and if you ask the bank 2-4 days after banking it "Has it cleared?" - You will get a YES! - It may also appear in your account!!

HOWEVER!!!! - 'Has it cleared' does NOT mean it 'has value' (i.e. its worth anything) - you must ask if the Cheque 'has value' to be sure.
Its an annoying quirk in bank-speak that many fall for, and banks never make clear to its customers.

IMPORTANT: Cheques deposited MAY show in your balance even though it is uncleared - and when the fake cheque bounces (and it will, trust me) YOU will be liable for overdraft fees and a possible bounced cheque fee.

SELLING YOU GOODS SCAM

We've recently been told of a scam that appears when you are selling or advertising wanted items.
The scammer will contact you with relevant items for sale - at a great price, but because of 'moving' or some other invented problem - they will insist on you not being able to collect the items, or see them in person - but insist on your sending the money to them first.

• If you are in doubt about an email you have recieved, plase drop us a line and we'll look at it for you. Just email scams@ classicdirtbike.co.uk

• Remember, scams are always in bad english and ALWAYS try to send you more money they you're asking for.
Don't fall victim to greed - always check and think about what is being offered / asked for.
